First Week in Review of the School Year

Old School Speech
One week of therapy down! I don't feel very organized with my therapy planning yet.  We have Kindergarten Screenings next week, so I may see some students on Mon./Wed. afternoon.  The next week is Labor Day, so I have a 3 day week since I'm taking a personal day that Friday. The week after that, it'll be business as usual. I spent the first week with my kids gathering baseline data and trying to figure out what they need to be working on, especially at my new/old school.
Since we start school in the summer, I decided to start off with a beach theme.  So of course I had to use There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell.  I've found with companion packets that I end up needing to buy 2 different packets so that I hit the targets that my kids are working on.  This past week, I read the book with my 1st - 5th graders, and they played the following as games: (From Simply Speech)
We also played the open-ended game, and my Kindergarten students completed the mini-book from Crazy Speech World's Companion Packet. (I forgot to take pictures!)
Since I'm at a new/old school (I'm back at a school that I left 2 years ago), I don't know most of the students. I'm trying to feel my way with some of them as far as exactly where they are with their speech/language skills.

Preschool Walk-in and Kindergarten
I started off 2 weeks ago using Ten Little Fish (Audrey Wood).  The students followed directions by coloring the big, medium sized, or small fish from Ocean Part 3 (3 Dinosaurs)

The student colored each fish the stated color (from 3 Dinosaurs Ocean Tot Pack). This was made into a book and reviewed with the student.  The carrier phrase was "This fish is color" to target following directions and making complete sentences.
Ocean Book Packet from Chapel Hill Snippets.  I downloaded the book on my iPad and we "read" the book.  Then, after each student named the animals, she chose the ones that live in the ocean and put them on the board:

We followed that with the ocean sheet from Structured Sentence Building (Queen's Speech).  It was perfect to use with these girls, and with the ocean theme!  (Gotta love it when that happens!)

Somewhere in the past 2 weeks, we read Crabs everywhere (Chapel Hill Snippets) and worked on the carrier phrase, "Crabs on/under the ____."
We ended the Ocean Theme with Jellyfish (from Chapel Hill Snippet's Ocean Book Packet).  After the girls put the jellyfish together, they put the pictures in order (with a lot of help!) and verbally sequenced the activity.
I think the year has started off pretty well. Next week I will only see some of my afternoon students since I'll be involved with Kindergarten Mass Screenings for most of the week.  That means I'll be pulling games off of the shelf!
What activities do/did you use start your year?

  1. I really love your site.. Excellent colors & theme.
Did you make this website yourself? Please reply back as I'm looking to create
my own personal site and would like to find out where you got this from or exactly what the theme is named.
    Many thanks!

Have a look at my blog post :: Desert Plants

    1. Yes, I put my blog together myself by looking through other blogs and getting ideas on what I wanted mine to look like. There were a lot of google searches to find just the right background, as well as emailing other bloggers to find out how they did some things.
